Amazing Days Out: Rossall Point Observation Tower
Rossall Point offers one of the best free views of the Lancashire coastline
If you’re ever in Fleetwood, you’ll surely take a walk on the gorgeous beach. If you do, you’ll see what looks like a robot. In fact, it reminds us of Bender from Futurama, and is located on the sand dunes between Fleetwood and Cleveleys. Make sure to go and investigate. It is called Rossall Point, and is comprised of a special building set up to provide great views of the beach. The four-storey tower is also used as a beacon.
The top two floors have observation decks, with the top level being open air. There are usually a couple of volunteers in there who are extremely friendly and will dispense lots of information. Both of these floors provide binoculars to look out to sea with. The open top floor even has a telescope, through which you may get to see a new island that has recently formed, and the remains of one of the oldest lighthouses in the world. The views extend across Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. You can also focus the lenses on to birds, for another great experience.
The ground floor houses an education facility which is very informative. You can see footage from a camera that is located at the top of the tower if you are unable to climb the stairs. The tower is free to visit, and well worth your time. In fact, there is probably only the Blackpool Tower that gives better views across the Lancashire coastline. Once you are done with the Observation Tower, you can take a walk along the beach, have a look for mussels, or dig for clams. There are plenty of places for an ice cream too, perfect for a summer’s day.
Are there any cool observation towers in your area? Have you been to Rossall Point?
